Rose Tinted Spectacle Film Season

To complement their unmissable portrait exhibition, Renaissance Faces, National Gallery is presenting a series of films that explore the relationships between image and memory. The romantic and artistic features in the Rose Tinted Spectacle film season will be partnered with a short, rare classic or new work of film or animation, giving you a truly eye-opening experience.

Films from the late greats
The six films in the National Gallery's Rose Tinted Spectacle film season include Hitchcock's 1940s classic Rebecca, starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. Film lovers will jump at the chance to get a dose of romantic nostalgia on the big screen, and relive the experiences of the new Mrs de Winter as she returns to Manderley and faces the haunting memory of her husband's first wife, Rebecca. Also screening as part of the film season is Ingmar Bergman's witty 1955 masterpiece, Smiles of a Summer Night, which is centred around an elegant turn of the century country house party. Accompanying these classic films from the late greats are two short features, Cafe Bar and The Seawatchers, which both deal with love affairs between women and men in edgy, contemporary formats.

Foreign Flavour
Film loving Londoners will also welcome the chance to see world cinema films in the heart of the capital. Embracing movies with an international flavour, the Rose Tinted Spectacle film season features the ambitious and excellent project from Chilean filmmaker Raoul Ruiz, Time Regained. An innovative biopic of the twilight years of Marcel Proust's life dealing with the author's memories of things past, Time Regained goes to the heart of the themes linking together the Rose Tinted Spectacle film season. Danish director Carl Dreyer will also be represented at the National Gallery cinema with his uncompromising film Gertrud, which explores the status of women through the passionate love life of the film's heroine.

New Talent
Alongside these iconic films, the National Gallery will also be presenting more short features from international filmmakers. Designed to get you thinking about the types of representation apparent in the gallery's high profile Renaissance Faces exhibition, mini films such as Dryden Goodwin's Hold and Hanspeter Ammann's Couple are also a chance to discover new and exciting artistic talent working in cinema today.

The Rose Tinted Spectacle film season runs on Saturdays from 18th October - 6th December. Films start at 2.30pm in the Sainsbury Wing Theatre at the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square. Tickets are £3.00 - £4.00.
