Chinawhite Closing

Subject: Clubs

A couple of weeks ago I told you all the sad news that a number of London clubs are closing (see Central London Clubs Closing). One of these was the Marmite of London clubs Chinawhite. If ever there was a club in London that epitomised a love-it-or-hate-it venue then this place is it. In the past, it was a hotbed of celebrity activity, although in recent years it’s lost some of its A-list appeal. That said, Lindsay Lohan and Sam Ronson did add this club to their list of visits (see Celebrity DJs at London Clubs) when Sam was DJing her way across the capital so it isn’t quite a dead duck. I’m sure many people will be sad to see Chinawhite closing.

Anyone who’s been to Chinawhite will know the deal. I visited the club for a Shipwrecked closing party a couple of years ago and spent the evening squashed onto a crammed dancefloor as WAG wannabes flirted and snogged their way across the dancefloor. OK, OK, I admit I did have blonde extensions in those days and was partial to the odd mini dress so I did fit right in with the fake tan brigade and I also admit I kinda had fun that night. It was a school night though and I did suffer at work the next day! Although I’m sad to see Chinawhite closing, it’s not a place I frequent anymore and it won’t have a big effect on my own clubbing life, but I do think it will leave a hole in the London club scene. Especially as Paper, Cafe Royal and Dolce London are all closing as well.

And so we’ve finally reached December. Christmas parties are coming, as are the NYE club nights, but the dark cloud of Chinawhite closing hangs over all our heads. I will say a sad goodbye to a club that has seen a world of celebrity parties and scandals. The paps will have to find a new home…

Its last night will be on Saturday 20th December – I’ll see you on the dancefloor. I’ll be doing my best WAG impression.

2008 is a sad year for the clubs scene, I won't miss Chinawhite that much but I will miss many of the other places.

Good spot pari5, at the time of writing I hadn't been informed of the new date...

Well, the Mayfair Club has just opened... Now, it's a gentleman's club, but at 3.30am at weekends it transforms into a late night commercial club and is meant to be pretty cool. I also really rate Taman Gang. This used to just be a swanky A-list restaurant, but now does club nights from 10pm - it is awesome and has a similar, if less trashy, vibe to Chinawhite with a Buddha-style theme. Of course, there are newbies Vendome Mayfair and Jalouse to fill the void, Jalouse is members only but you can get in on Weds and Thurs if you're on the list and look the part...

Hope that helps! Good luck finding a new haunt...
